Maria Han Veiga

Assistant Professor in Maths @ Ohio State University

Before, I was at University of Michigan affiliated with MIDAS and Mathematics, working with Prof. Oleg Gnedin and Prof. Xun Huan. I did my PhD at University of Zurich, under the supervision of Prof. RĂ©mi Abgrall and Prof. Romain Teyssier.

I like to think about the following things:

  • Scientific Machine Learning: constraint-aware methods, uncertainty quantification, interpretability and hybrid solvers
  • Structure-preserving numerical methods for nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs
  • Arbitrary high order methods for PDEs/ODEs
  • Privacy in machine learning methods
  • Applications of ML (astrophysics, medical AI, natural language processing)

News, conferences, travels

Teaching

  • 2173 Math: Engineering Maths, Fall 2023
  • MATH498: Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022. Lecture notes (v.0.0)
  • MATH371: Numerical Methods for Engineering

Supervision

I am happy to supervise students for master thesis, bachelor thesis, REU or UROPs. A sample of projects:
  • Impact of weak imposition of constraints in fully connected neural networks (REU, UoM)
  • Federated learning approach for medical AI applications (REU, UoM)
  • Speeding up planetary system composition using surrogate models (REU, UoM)
  • Fooling facial recognition algorithms (Semester Project, UZH)
